Biotechnologies

In a broad sense, biotechnology is a range of scienti c fields that rely on the application of knowledge and
methods from biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, and chemical technology.

In a more applied sense, biotechnology refers to the industrial use of biological agents, such as microorganisms, animals, and plants, to produce specic products that are valuable for various human activities.

The Pharmaceutical Development and Research of New Medicines

The «Biotechnology of Plant Raw Materials» program includes:

  • studying the possibilities and prospects for the development of modern biotechnology;
  • mastering the methods of pharmacognostic analysis of medicinal plant raw materials (macro- and microscopic, commodity-related, and phytochemical);
  • mastering the skills of determining the technological properties of plant raw materials (bulk density, swelling coefficient, porosity, etc.);
  • study of various classical and modern methods for extracting biologically active substances from plant raw materials;
  • development of methods for determining the content of biologically active substances in plant raw materials (anthocyanins, tannins, etc.);
  • creation of extracts, tinctures, and decoctions based on plant raw materials, production of functional food products, development of formulations for herbal teas, perfumes, cosmetics, plant growth stimulants, essential oils, etc.

The program «Industrial Microbiology» includes:

  • deepening knowledge of the fundamentals of biotechnology and industrial microbiology;
  • familiarization with biotechnological achievements in industrial microbiology and promising developments in the field of biotechnology in the world and the Republic of Belarus;
  • study of basic biotechnological processes;
  • familiarization with industrial microbiology technologies;
  • mastering methods of working with industrial and collection strains of microorganisms;
  • studying the principles of working with biological objects in biotechnological production and the requirements for them;
  • development of skills in using reagents, nutrient media, and experimental equipment correctly, as well as in using measuring instruments;
  • development of skills to work with microbial cultures under aseptic conditions and to cultivate microorganisms using various methods.

The Food Biotechnology program includes:

  • studying the state, opportunities, and prospects for the development of modern food biotechnology;
  • familiarization with the principles of working with biological objects in food production;
  • studying the main components of food products and their role in the human body;
  • study of basic food production technologies;
  • mastering the basic biochemical and microbiological processes in food production;
  • developing skills for analyzing the properties of raw materials, assessing the impact of storage conditions on the quality of finished products, and determining the quality indicators of food products;
  • creation of functional food products using the acquired knowledge.

The Plant Biotechnology program includes:

  • deepening knowledge about plant biotechnology, its main objects, goals, and objectives, and the relationship between biotechnology and other fields of science and industry;
  • studying the basics of plant microclonal propagation;
  • familiarization with the concept of “plant stress resistance”, the classification of stress factors in higher plants, and approaches to standardized study of stress resistance in higher plants;
  • formation of a complex of knowledge about priming and the effect of basic priming agents on the growth processes of ornamental and agricultural plants;
  • familiarization with modern microscopy techniques and their specific features;
  • mastering light and fluorescence microscopy techniques;
  • development of ideas about digital phenotyping of plants;
  • mastering the technique of obtaining images for digital phenotyping and analyzing them using specialized software.

The Microbiology Biotechnology program includes the following:

  • formation of the theoretical foundations of fundamental and applied aspects of microbiology;
  • acquiring skills for working in aseptic conditions in a microbiological laboratory;
  • development of selective methods for isolating and obtaining pure cultures of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, yeast, and actinomycetes;
  • studying the biotechnological potential of microorganisms for producing enzymes, antibiotics, biologically active substances, pigments, etc.;
  • obtaining promising producers of biologically active substances;
  • familiarization with modern microscopy techniques and their use in laboratory conditions;
  • mastering the skills of processing digital images of microbiological research objects;
  • acquiring the skills of modeling microbiological experiments.

The Environmental Biotechnology program includes:

  • familiarization with the current problems of modern crop production and methods of environmentalization in crop production;
  • studying the diversity of domestic and foreign biological products to solve the problems of modern crop production, and the algorithm for searching for microorganisms that form the basis of microbial products;
  • mastering modern methods of working with microorganisms;
  • study of the characteristics of nutrient media for the cultivation of microorganisms, and methods for obtaining accumulative and pure cultures of microorganisms;
  • development of methods for determining the phytopathogenic and economically useful properties of microorganisms;
  • mastering microbial storage methods;
  • acquisition of skills and knowledge in preparing nutrient media for the cultivation of microorganisms, selecting plant and soil samples for the isolation of microorganisms, obtaining accumulative and pure cultures of microorganisms, and isolating microorganisms from various natural sources.

The Genetic Engineering program includes:

  • formation of an empirical basis in the field of microbial genetic engineering for solving biotechnological problems of fundamental and applied nature;
  • studying the structure of bacterial cells and the organization of genetic material in prokaryotes;
  • development of methods for cultivating microorganisms in nutrient media and for isolating nucleic acids from bacterial cells;
  • studying the principles and mastering the basic methods used to create vector systems and introduce them into bacterial cells;
  • acquiring the skills to use specialized software for working with nucleotide sequences and designing vector systems;
  • gaining experience in research and experimental activities in the field of genetic engineering.

The Pharmaceutical Development and Research of New Medicines program includes:

  • mastering the basic scientific concepts used in pharmaceutical chemistry and technology;
  • familiarization with the current state and development trends of pharmaceutical chemistry and technology, as well as regulatory documents on the quality control of medicines;
  • formation of knowledge about the biopharmaceutical properties of pharmaceutical substances and excipients;
  • development of skills and abilities to produce the main types of dosage forms;
  • mastering pharmaceutical analysis methods;
  • development of skills in the field of pharmaceutical development and research of new medicines.

The program is implemented with the assistance of Belarusian State Medical University.
